1 Corinthians 11:11-12 (The Message Translation)

12 The first woman came from man, true—but ever since then, every man comes from a woman! And … everything comes from God …

Remarkable! God dignifies women. They play a pivotal role. Without women, there are no men.

How does God treat the Bible’s first homeless single mother, cast out by Abraham, the Patriarch of Many? Hagar is the only person, male or female, to ever speak, see, and name God directly in the Hebrew Bible.

Hagar asked herself, “Have I seen God and lived to tell about it?”

13 She answered God by name, praying to the God who spoke to her, “You’re the God who sees me!

“Yes! He saw me, and then I saw him!” (Genesis 16: 13 The Message Translation)

God promises Abraham that he will have many generations through Isaac and Jacob. He promises the same to Hagar, which means Hagar is, in effect, a female ‘patriarch.’

Though Abraham expels Hagar and Ishmael into the desert, Ishmael never leaves Abraham’s realm of love and paternity. What’s more, Ishmael never leaves the sphere of God’s blessing” (Chapter 5: Abraham – A Life without Borders; Sub-chapter 5.7: Hagar Calls God the Living One Who Sees Me; Page 127; Kindle Locations 2538-2548).

“We must not allow the human person to suffer from undue diminishing actions, becoming in some way an object in a materialist vision that sees only his or her economic value, or which is willing to sacrifice him or her as a means to be manipulated in various ways. The same thing holds regarding the dignity of every people.
