Beyond the shores of the ‘from sea to shining sea,’ the rest of humanity wonders why a Democracy would want one party-rule. Should one political party rule the Presidency, the Senate, the House of Representatives, the Supreme Court notwithstanding all local and state legislatures? Disturbingly a sub-segment of American Christianity, Dominion Theology, espouses to constitute a one-party ‘theocracy.’ (See my article, dated 14 October 2020, ‘Beyond Confirmation Bias – A New World Order?’)
The People’s Republic of China, the Russian Federation, and the Islamic Republic of Iran also favor one-party rule. And, Modern-Israel is, again, governed by the Party of the Pharisees. Like the United States, these so-called ‘democracies’ also feature universal suffrage. Their Constitutions encourage citizens to vote similar to voting everywhere.
The Pharisees [in Jesus’ time] belittle the Israelites in Galilee as ‘remnants of Israel’ (Israelites married to ‘pagan Gentiles’). They degrade the Gentiles in Galilee as impure. The pure-bred pedigreed Judeans scorn and vilify the half-breed Israelites as well as the Gentiles of Galilee.
Who are these new ‘Christ Followers in Galilee;’ these Gentiles; these half-breed Israelites, but Israelites, nonetheless?
“All of them the remnants of Israel, the Gentiles in Galilee, the half-breed Samaritans in Samaria and many, many other ethnic groups in the Region make up the rich and vibrant human tapestry, whom I love and admire as my brothers and sisters, the indigenous people of Palestine. Yes! Today’s Palestinians!” (Appendix: In Search of; Page 167; Kindle Locations 3412-3419).
Now to the 11th hour of the US elections. Bas Blokker reports in the NRC Handelsblad, the conservative daily in The Netherlands:
“Nerves tremble all over the country. Around the White House in Washington, shopkeepers are building wooden siding for their windows. Supermarket chain Walmart will remove all firearms and ammunition from the shelves until they are sure that there will be no civil disturbance after Tuesday. Applications for gun licenses have increased by 72 percent this year compared to 2019. It seems that the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic, in particular, is driving people to buy weapons, although I heard in a pawnshop that ‘nothing sells more guns than a president.‘”
Is America unglued?
Saint Pope John Paul II in ‘Love … A River Flowing Through Life,’ challenges us to consider:
“How can we be honest if there is bribery and corruption around us? How can we become holy if the surest way to earn a living is to be mean and exploit others? How can we become holy if we live in a world that cheapens true love or does not appreciate the beauty of chaste love? I hear these questions and many more besides. God, the Father knows your difficulties, but he also knows that deep down, you want to do the right thing; deep down, you want to follow Christ because you know that he is “the way and the truth and the life” (John 14: 6-7 Message Translation).
Of course, the path to holiness is not easy, but that should not prevent us from facing difficulties with courage. The way to holiness is a journey, sometimes an arduous journey involving an inner struggle against selfishness and sin. We must be adequately equipped to make this journey. Saint Paul gives us a list of the “clothing” – the attitudes – necessary; he says: “You should be clothed in sincere compassion, kindness and humility, gentleness and patience” (Colossians 3: 12).
