Wow! Daring! The article, ‘Neither Israel’s nor Germany’s Slide Into Fascism Was Accidental,’ proclaimed by Israeli Yoav Rinon, Associate Professor in the Departments of Comparative Literature and of Classics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem is based on the research project, “Questions of Identity,” funded by the Israel Science Foundation. Haaretz, one of Israel’s acclaimed dailies, has published this divisive but provocative article on 3 June 2019.
Let me cut to the chase. “Nothing is more anti-Semitic than modern-day or Pagan Zionism. Heathen Zionists have bastardized a most beautiful, God-given word to veil their crimes and ingratiate themselves on the world stage, to justify their atrocities against a defenseless people under the banner of Holy Goodness. Yoav Rinon concludes: the degeneration of the German identity into Nazism was neither an accident nor a mistake. The seeds were there from the outset, and one can recognize them already at the inchoate stages of the fashioning of German identity. In light of the essential similarities between German identity and Jewish-Israeli identity along their various stages of construction, we may conclude that we are sliding down the same slope, which leads, for precisely the same reasons, to the same abyss of racism and fascism.”
Each one of us has the good, bad, and ugly within us. Which trait we choose defines who we are. Right now, and for too long, the bad people in the region have hijacked the good people, a minority tyrannizing the majority. Most people – the majority – in the Region want peace (Page 135; Kindle Locations 2670-2673*).
It’s time to change. Change, not chains, must be our goal.
